The Yamaha Zuma is one of the world's most popular scooters, a dual-headlight step-through model available with a 50cc two-stroke, 50cc four-stroke, or 125cc four-stroke engine. The machine has a decidedly rugged style that recalls the venerable Honda Ruckus, and the BW model designation stands for "Big Wheel" — a nod to the bike's chunky wheels and tires.

"The BW's 125 is an off-road inspired scoot that goes nicely and looks even nicer — rugged styling marks it out as a small scoot aimed at blokes." —MCN

The 125cc Zuma makes around 9 hp, good for a top speed of 65 mph, while the 49cc two-stroke model, the Zuma 50, is good for around 45 mph and returns a mind-blowing 89 mpg!

It's easy to overlook insurance coverage on these machines, but most states do indeed require riders to carry insurance coverage in order to ride their Zumas on public streets — particularly the Zuma 125 models. Not all carriers insure scooters, so it can be a little tricky to navigate coverage, but we can help. Enter your zip code to begin comparing rates and policies from companies in your area.

Brief History of the Yamaha Zuma 50 / 125

Yamaha Zuma Insurance

The original Zuma 50 was introduced all the way back in 1989, and continues to remain in production today. It's gone through three generations of development and been known by a variety of model designations and nicknames. The first generation "CW50" was in production from 1989-2001, though it was not available in the USA during all of that time. The Minarelli two-stroke vertical engine offered a good bit of performance and tuning potential, which helped kick off the aftermarket scooter performance scene in the US.

The second-gen Zuma, available from 2002-2011, is known as the YW50 or "bug-eye" Zuma. It was the best-selling scooter in the USA and Canada in multiple years, and the new Minarelli engine was horizontal, allowing for more storage space beneath the seat. There's a huge online community and aftermarket support for these models, if customization is your thing.

The third-generation Zuma 50F dropped the two-stroke powerplant in favor of a fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, three-valve four-stroke engine. In 2009, Yamaha unveiled the Zuma 125, powered by an air-cooled four-valve four-stroke engine that makes 9 bhp. Realistically, top speeds of 55-60 mph and fuel economy in the 70-75 mpg range are achievable. Style-wise, the Zuma has now moved away from the iconic "bug-eye" headlights, which had begun to look aged.

Insuring a Yamaha Zuma:  Coverage Options

Yamaha Zuma Insurance

In most states, if you have to insure your Zuma, only liability coverage is required. However, if you want your Zuma protected from accident damage, theft, or vandalism, you'll need to consider collision and/or comprehensive coverage — together known as "Full Coverage."

  • Collision: Protects your Zuma in the event of an accident. Sometimes collision includes Uninsured/Under-insured (UM/UIM) coverage — a very good addition, given the number of uninsured drivers on today's roads.
  • Comprehensive: Protects your Zuma if it's damaged by fire, wind, water, or other "acts of God." It also protects against theft and vandalism.

Yamaha Zuma Insurance Rates

It's difficult to estimate what your insurance rates will be, given the multitude of factors involved: location, age, driving record, displacement, coverage options, and much more.

  • Male, 20s, Yamaha Zuma 50, Full Coverage: $140 / year
  • Male, 28, Tennessee, Yamaha Zuma 125, Full Coverage, Geico: $252 / year
  • Male, 28, Tennessee, Yamaha Zuma 125, Liability only, Geico: $144 / year
  • Male, 40s, Colorado, Yamaha Zuma 125, Liability only: $100 / year

The number one most important thing you can do to keep your rates low is shop your coverage among multiple insurers. That's because rates vary widely from company to company when it comes to motorcycles and scooters. Fortunately, we can help.
